The River Stour is one of Sudbury's best assets and no-one appreciates this more than former town mayor, Lesley Ford-Platt.
As publicity officer for the River Stour Trust, which has recently welcomed actor Griff Rhys Jones as new vice-president, she is keen to promote the river to local people and visitors alike.

"I have actually had people say to me that they didn't know the river was there, which I find astonishing.

"It is a wonderful asset and I am proud to be involved with the trust. We want people to enjoy the river."

This Saturday will be a proud day for the trust as years of fund-raising climax with the opening of the visitors' centre at Cornard Lock.

Lord Phillips will open the building, which cost £200,000 to build and fit out, and it is hoped schools and other groups will visit to find out more about the river.

More than 20 boats will arrive at the centre to mark the opening and a jazz band will provide a fanfare.

On Bank Holiday Monday it was the turn of youngsters to enjoy boats trips with their teddies in the annual event.

"This event is always enjoyed whatever the weather," said Mrs Ford-Platt. "It is a wonderful introduction to the river for children who will hopefully appreciate it as they grown up."
