A STRIKE by more than 600 workers at the Delphi engineering plant in Sudbury has been called off.
Talks between unions and company directors broke down last week and staff voted 83% in favour of strike action over a 2.5% pay offer.

But with the deadline for picket action at 10pm tonight approaching, a Delphi spokesman said the strike had been averted for now and another ballot would take place before Monday on a new offer.

Unions had been demanding a pay offer of four per cent.

A worker, who did not want to be named, said: "The last thing we want is a strike so we are going to ballot again on a new offer closer to the original 2.5%.

"With the rising cost of living we are hoping we can get a better offer with no strings attached to our working conditions."
